UnMask is a concept dating app that helps people connect through conversation before appearance. There are no profile pictures — instead, users begin with a voice-only call for the first 5 minutes, then gradually reveal their faces as trust builds.

Problem
Most dating apps today focus heavily on physical appearance, encouraging users to make quick judgments based on just a few photos or videos. This often leads to shallow conversations, fast rejections, and a lack of genuine emotional connection. Many users feel pressured to look a certain way or experience anxiety about being judged too early. There’s a clear need for a dating experience that allows people to build trust, comfort, and real connection *before* revealing their full appearance.
Goal
Design a dating app that prioritizes genuine early conversations, helping users build trust and connection before appearance becomes the focus — reducing the pressure to impress visually and encouraging more meaningful matches.
User Flow

Design
Onboarding
Introducing UnMask’s vision: “Trust before looks.”
Login & Registration
Simple and familiar sign-in options (Email, Google, Apple).
Profile Setup
Users create a profile with mask avatars, not photos, reducing pressure and bias.
Preferences
Control filters like distance, gender, and age for safe, tailored matches.
Start Call
The beginning of UnMask’s unique staged reveal experience.

Stage 1 Five Minutes Voice Call
Users start with a short call (5 minutes) while wearing a mask avatar. This reduces pressure and shifts focus to conversation rather than appearance.
Stage 2 Masked Conversation
If both users agree to continue, the call extends while still masked, allowing more natural interaction and comfort building.
Stage 3 Real Face Reveal
Only when both parties mutually agree, the masks are lifted and faces are revealed—symbolizing earned trust and genuine interest.
Matches & Conversations
After a successful call, users can continue chatting in the Matches section, encouraging ongoing relationship building beyond the reveal.

Based on Feedback, I Iterated the Design
Originally, users landed on a screen with two separate buttons for “Login” and “Sign Up.” In this iteration, I redesigned the login page to streamline the process by including the login form directly on the screen. I added input fields for email and password, along with helpful options like “Remember Me” and “Forgot Password?” to enhance usability. To guide new users, I also added a bottom prompt: “Don’t have an account? Register here”, which redirects to the sign-up process. Overall, the layout and text hierarchy were refined to create a clearer and more intuitive experience.

Changed background from #FFDBC7 (warm peach) to #F3E9F7 (soft lavender) to better reflect the app’s romantic and mysterious tone and adjusted the secondary colour to maintain contrast and emotional balance in the new colour scheme. The new colour supports a romantic, calmer, more emotionally engaging atmosphere while improving contrast with text and UI elements
